Connecting with us by Zoom from Paonia in Colorado, Dave Smith will be offering us some fresh perspectives on secular dharma.
Doors open at 7:15, we’ll have a short meditation from a little after 7:30pm and Dave will connect with us online at 8:00. Our evening concludes with tea, biscuits and conviviality.
Many people are presently developing ways to integrate the various disciplines of science into the embodied practice of meditation. Within the emerging field of secular mindfulness, new perspectives and practices are emerging in a wide range of contexts. All in all, it is a very exciting time to be engaged in the dharma.
While we may have been looking at a secular approach to Buddhism, what can secularity bring to Buddhism and the practice of the dharma? During this talk, Dave will outline the basis of how we might understand a secular dharma, and discuss the many ways secularity can inform our dharma practice. He will touch on the science of emotion, on neuroscience and look at therapeutic approaches that have emerged from mental and behavioural health disciplines.
Dave sees secular dharma as a practice that recognises the integration of psychology, science and various therapeutic modalities within the contemplative practices of the Buddhist tradition. The emphasis on first person direct experience, he believes, allows for an open and honest exploration of the possibilities and limitations of our own embodied and shared humanity.
