From Invercargill in the deep south, Leon Frampton spoke to us by Zoom on the gains and losses we can expect from meditation practice.

Asked, ‘What have you gained from meditation?’ the Buddha reportedly responded, ‘Nothing! However let me tell you what I have lost: anger, anxiety, depression, insecurity, and fear of old age and death.’

Examining and gently discarding the once useful but maladaptive behaviours and beliefs of our past with the help of an open practice like this, he believes, allows different people to speak to us in the various stages of our lives and practice.

Meditation and Leon have been together since 1992, ‘and will be ’til death do us part,’ he says. While he continues to practise zen meditation, he also takes in the teachings of other Buddhist thinkers, traditional and secular, believing that an open practice allows different people to speak to us in the various stages of our lives, and practice.

Leon tells us he enjoys participating in the OMB project, albeit from a distance.
