Walking meditation on Oriental Bay beach

  • Freyberg Pool 139 Oriental Parade Oriental Bay, Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)

We’ll meet on the next to the Freyberg pool, and end with drinks at the Copthorne afterwards, if you wish.

~ Bad weather backup – social evening at the Copthorne Hotel

When practicing walking meditation, aim to stroll along the beach slowly. The intention is to feel every footstep, and being shoeless on the beach is great for this.

We will walk for 40 minutes, then gather together for a brief conversation and head off for a drink afterwards.

Thich Nhat Hanh on how to walk

‘Many of my ancestors and many of my friends from my generation have already passed away. A good friend of mine is in a wheelchair and can’t walk. Another friend has such pain in his knees that he can’t walk up and down stairs. So I walk for them. When I breath in, I say to myself, ‘it’s wonderful that I am still able to walk like this.’ With that awareness, I can enjoy every step. I say ‘I am alive!’ Mindfulness reminds me to notice and enjoy that my body is alive and strong enough for me to walk.’

As well as walking on the Earth, we need to care for it. Bring a yellow council rubbish bag or a green council recycling bag so you can pick up any rubbish you come across.
